About

Life What If is an application I tried to launch. It is a work in progress.

Problem

What if I move to a less expensive state? retire early? take a lower paying job? live to 100? Will I be OK? Will I have enough money? Those are some of the questions we ask as we go through life.

Unfortunately, financial tools in the marketplace either provide a narrow approach to financial decisions (e.g. rent vs. own), or provide a static dashboard of a user's transactions (e.g. Mint). These tools require many inputs creating friction points. The tools do not provide adequate, future looking scenarios that empower people to make better decisions.

We know there is demand to answer the questions above, but unless you are proficient at creating sophisticated spreadsheets and have access to regional economic data, then you are left navigating blind.

Solution

The app is a simple financial forecaster. We cannot predict the future but we can provide a tool that helps people navigate it. Compare multiple future scenarios and determine the impact on your financial well-being. People can make better decisions when they can visualize potential choices.

The application removes the complexity of the spreadsheet and provides a simple to use mobile app, an app that is smart with public data around housing, education cost, cost of living, regional taxes, and social security. We show value within 5 minutes. We don’t need access to all your financial information to model the impact of a decision. We make assumptions based on local knowledge, expert advice and trends.

The picture gets clearer as the user engages.

Design Direction: The app has two primary destinations : My Finances Now and My Finances with a What If Scenario. Toggle between the two and the graph animates. In the middle of the interface is an ability to add a scenario, income or expense.

Challenges

Trying to solve the revenue stream of the application was the challenge. One option would be a free to start and an add on model. Additional [What Ifs] would be an additional charge.
